Why do the copper tubes in my bathroom turn a green colour?

This is a natural occurrence in copper and is referred to as oxidisation. The actual green colouration is called a patina. Though this is a natural occurrence, it has become highly fashionable and many people actually try to accelerate the process.

Is it safe to use copper in my home’s plumbing?
